Transmission, generation and storage projects in the South West REZ

Transmission projects

The South West Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) will include two new transmission projects:

  • Project EnergyConnect
  • Victoria NSW Interconnector West (VNI West).

Together, these form the ‘access rights network’ in the REZ.

Generation and storage projects

Four renewable energy and storage projects have been granted access rights in the South West REZ. These projects have a combined generation capacity of 3.56 gigawatts, made up of wind, solar and batteries.

These are the first access right holders in the South West REZ. They will be able to connect to the access rights network.

Generation and storage projects in the South West REZ

The projects below have been granted the right to connect to the South West REZ access rights network following a competitive tender process. You can learn more about that process on the AEMO Services website.

These projects will connect up to 3.56 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy to the South West REZ transmission network when they are complete. They'll deliver millions of dollars of direct community and employment benefits through the South West REZ Community and Employment Benefit Program, funded through generator access fees.

The process for awarding access rights for the South West REZ

AEMO Services Limited (ASL), in its role as the NSW Consumer Trustee under the Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, ran a competitive tender process for access rights in the South West REZ.

Following this tender, EnergyCo awarded four renewable energy projects access rights that represent 3.56 gigawatts of wind, solar and battery generation and storage.

The projects awarded access rights in the South West REZ were found to be the most competitive applicants against the assessed merit criteria.

The tender was very competitive, receiving bids representing over 15 gigawatts of wind, solar and battery capacity. This was almost four times the generation capacity available under this tender.

What's next for access right in the South West REZ

Projects that wish to connect to new transmission projects in the South West REZ must have an access right. There are currently no plans for another competitive access rights tender.

Projects that didn’t receive access rights may still be able to connect to lines that are not part of the South West REZ access rights network, subject to approvals processes.

Assessing impacts in the South West REZ

We are working with generation and transmission project partners, NSW Government agencies and local councils to deliver the South West REZ.

We will work with communities and key stakeholders to understand how we can ensure long-lasting benefits and minimise impacts for the community.
