South West Renewable Energy Zone

The South West Renewable Energy Zone will initially unlock 3.56 gigawatts of clean energy generation capacity within the next decade. It will be capable of powering up to 1.6 million homes.

Key details

The South West REZ stretches from Dinawan Substation in the east to Buronga Substation in the west and will include:

  • 2 new transmission lines – Project EnergyConnect and Victoria NSW Interconnector West (VNI West)
  • 4 renewable energy projects, including wind, solar and battery storage infrastructure.

These projects will add 3.56 gigawatts of generation capacity to NSW's grid.

Working with the community

The South West REZ will bring significant private investment, community benefit and employment opportunities to the region.

Part of our role as infrastructure planner for the South West REZ involves working closely with the community and local businesses to maximise benefits and minimise impacts.

Renewable energy companies and Transgrid are also consulting with communities regarding the impacts and benefit sharing initiatives from their projects.

Upcoming consultation on the Community and Employment Benefit Program

The NSW Government has legislated funding for community and employment purposes in declared REZs.

The Community and Employment Benefit Program is funded by our generator project partners through access fees.

We’ll soon consult the local community to understand how we should deliver our Community and Employment Benefit Program across the South West REZ.

Why the South West region was chosen

The NSW Government chose the South West region for a renewable energy zone because it:

  • has an abundance of high-quality wind and solar resources
  • is close to existing and planned high-voltage transmission lines including Project EnergyConnect
  • has relatively good land-use compatibility
  • has a strong pipeline of proposed wind and solar projects.
