NSW's Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap (the Roadmap) is expected to attract up to $77 billion of private investment into the NSW economy.  

NSW’s 5 renewable energy zones and priority infrastructure projects are forecast to create an estimated 6,970 direct jobs during peak construction and 4,450 ongoing direct jobs, primarily in regional areas.  

It will also deliver additional demand for workers in local manufacturing, retail, transport and the supply of goods and services.

Jobs and training for individuals

New energy infrastructure will bring local jobs, skills training and opportunities for people across NSW's regions.

Combined, the projects we're delivering under the Roadmap will deliver clean, affordable and reliable power for energy users across the state.

What jobs are in demand?

There are many jobs and skills required to plan, design, construct and operate renewable energy projects and electricity transmission lines.

Many of these jobs are expected to be in areas of skills shortage, such as electricians, metal trades workers, and civil and electrical engineers. 

Some of the key jobs expected to be in high demand across Australia and NSW are:

  • trades and technicians
  • construction and project managers
  • engineers (electrical, civil, mining)
  • construction labourers
  • community and stakeholder engagement managers
  • electrical and engineering trade assistants.

Renewable Energy Sector Board

The Minister for Energy established the NSW Renewable Energy Sector Board in February 2021. The board has representation from a broad range of stakeholders, including trade unions, the steel, metals fabrication, electricity, manufacturing and construction sectors, the renewable energy industry, NSW electricity customers and EnergyCo.

The board has developed a plan for the renewable energy sector, including detail on how to maximise the employment of local workers and foster training and apprenticeship opportunities. The consumer trustee will use the board’s plan when granting authorisations for projects to operate in each REZ, resulting in coordinated job and supply-chain opportunities for businesses in those areas. 

We at EnergyCo will consider the board’s plan in tenders for major electricity infrastructure projects for the REZs and the Waratah Super Battery Project.

Electricity Infrastructure Jobs Advocate

The Electricity Infrastructure Jobs Advocate advises the Minister for Energy on:

  • strategies and incentives to encourage investment, development, workforce development, employment, education and training in the energy sector in the Central-West Orana, New England, South West, Hunter-Central Coast and Illawarra regions
  • road, rail and port infrastructure required in these regions to promote export opportunities for generation, storage and network technology.
