EnergyCo and the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) are developing a pilot virtual power plant (VPP) program in the Illawarra Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). The VPP will enable the installation and coordination of consumer energy resources in social housing properties.

A VPP is a coordinated network of consumer energy resources, such as solar and/or batteries, that can support the grid like a power station. The pilot program provides an opportunity to improve coordination of home batteries to increase the stability of the electricity network and provide direct benefits to social housing tenants.

We’re testing how a VPP model on social housing works best in the REZ. This includes investigating how system installers and VPP operators can best work together to support a more reliable electricity network for all. 

Take part in the market sounding

We’re conducting a market sounding to shape the commercial and technical design of the VPP program. We’re seeking input from VPP operators and solar and battery installers to help inform design choices for the program, based on real-world experience.

This market sounding is not seeking households to participate in the program at this stage. Instead, the outcomes of the market sounding will be used to identify the locations, housing characteristics and areas that may be appropriate to target during program delivery.

This market sounding is exploratory and non-binding. It is not a procurement and does not commit EnergyCo or the NSW Government to funding, implementation or delivery of a future program.
