Hunter-first commitment to creating local job opportunities for Hunter Transmission Project
The Energy Corporation of NSW (EnergyCo) is encouraging Hunter-region businesses to register their interest in working on the Hunter Transmission Project (HTP).
The project features a Hunter-first commitment to creating local industry participation.
The HTP involves building a critical high-voltage transmission line that will run for around 100 kilometres as part of the State’s renewable energy transition.
EnergyCo is planning the HTP and expects a workforce of around 700 people will be needed. This will include opportunities for a variety of trades, services and professionals.
The Hunter-first commitment to creating local jobs and economic benefits will be incorporated into the construction contracts for the multi-billion-dollar project.
The types of jobs and services needed to build the HTP are listed on EnergyCo’s website, along with details of how to register for an expression of interest (EOI) and industry briefings to be held in the week starting Monday 26 August.
The HTP is essential to make sure NSW has a reliable electricity supply as our remaining coal-fired power stations close.
It will deliver the clean energy produced in the new Renewable Energy Zones to consumers across NSW.
EnergyCo anticipates appointing the design and construction contracts for the HTP from mid-2025.
The types of services that the HTP will need during design and construction include:
- labourers, security guards, cleaners and mining escorts
- plant operators, stringing crews, tower assembly crews, foundation crews, traffic control and geotechnical investigations
- engineers, planners, scientists, commercial, quality, legal, accounting, safety, community, surveyors, apprentices and trainees across all major trades including lines, electrical and foundations
- local supplier opportunities – civil contractors, surveyors, electricians, arborists (clearing and revegetation), steel fabricators, precast fabricators, quarried materials, local plant hire, local vehicle hire, local hardware retailers and other small retailers, catering and restaurants, cleaning and accommodation providers.
Quotes attributable to EnergyCo Executive Director Planning and Communities Ash Albury:
“The Hunter-first commitment will prioritise local jobs and economic benefit for the people of the Hunter who are the hosts of this critical State significant infrastructure.
"As part of the tender process to build and operate the HTP, applicants will be expected to address how they will prioritise local employment and engage local services.
“I encourage local businesses and service providers in the Hunter-region to attend an industry briefing and register their interest to work on this once-in-a-generation infrastructure project.”
