Upgrades to existing network proposed for Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone network infrastructure project

Project updates

EnergyCo is working with Ausgrid to finalise a proposed network solution to deliver the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone (REZ)

This involves upgrading the existing electricity distribution network to allow new renewable generation to connect to the grid.

Earlier this year, we issued a Request for Proposals to identify a suitable network operator. After careful evaluation, EnergyCo is progressing a proposal from Ausgrid, the existing distribution network service provider in the region.

This is a major milestone in the selection process for a network operator for the REZ, which is vital for NSW’s current and future energy needs.

The proposed solution will mainly involve network upgrades. This minimises impacts on surrounding communities and the environment, while delivering the capacity to transfer at least 1 gigawatt of renewable energy.

In the coming months, we will work with Ausgrid to finalise the scope to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Hunter-Central Coast REZ network infrastructure project.

This will bring significant economic benefits to the region including more jobs, opportunities for local businesses and potential new industries.

The map below shows the areas where the proposed Ausgrid upgrades will occur. We remain committed to engaging with local councils, landowners, communities, and businesses to ensure the project delivers benefits for all stakeholders.

Your feedback and participation will help make this happen.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Hunter-Central Coast REZ network infrastructure project?

The Hunter Central Coast REZ was declared by the Minister on 9 December 2022, with a network infrastructure capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW).

The Hunter-Central Coast REZ will ensure the region plays a key role in the state’s renewable energy future, powering existing industries and emerging technology in green hydrogen, ammonia and metal production, offshore wind, electric vehicle fleet operators and electrification of industrial processes.

To support the REZ, we are working with Ausgrid to finalise a network solution to upgrade the existing electricity network between Muswellbrook, Singleton and Kurri Kurri.

This will help meet both current and future energy needs.

What is the timeframe for completing the project?

Site work is planned to commence in late 2025 with initial capacity available by early 2026 and full capacity available mid 2028.

What are the next steps to finalise the Hunter-Central Coast network operator?

EnergyCo is working closely with Ausgrid to finalise a project agreement by the end of 2024, subject to NSW Government approval.

We will work closely with Ausgrid to engage with communities and stakeholders on the project.

What are the community impacts and benefits?

The proposed project includes upgrades to the existing Ausgrid network unlocking capacity for renewable energy and storage projects. This will bring benefits to the region, and we will work with communities to minimise impacts.

Benefits for local communities include more jobs, opportunities for local businesses and potential new industries for the area.

How can you get involved?

We will be engaging with local councils, landowners, communities, and businesses to minimise impacts and deliver benefits for all stakeholders in the coming weeks and months.

Your feedback and involvement will help make this happen.
